「ファミリーレストランのように、変わらないメニューで日常をお届けできるお店を目指して」

明るいグリーンのドアが印象的な『カフェとレストラン グローリーハウス』。
店内に入ると、同じカラーの巨大なスピーカー（太平山音響）が目を引く。

グローリーハウスといえば、看板メニューの『ミャークチキン』や道路沿いからも見えるショーケースに並んだ『スコーン』や『ベーグル』が人気だ。

2014年、夫の隼平（ジュンペイ）さんと二人でスタートさせたこのお店は今年で11年目を迎え、12年目へと歩みを進めている。

店名「グローリーハウス」には、隼平さんの実家（北茨城）で営まれていた民宿「さかえや」の名前を受け継いだという物語がある。
場所やかたちは違っても、宮古島の地でその歴史は静かに繋がっている。

もともと幸恵さんは学生時代から陸上選手として活躍していたが、怪我で競技を断念。
その後、飲食店でのアルバイトを通して料理の世界に魅了され、ハードワークの中で『スコーン』や『ベーグル』作りを身につけた。
それらの経験が、グローリーハウスの味の原点になっている。

“こだわりのレストラン”というよりも、“楽しい食堂”であることを大切にしており、「地元のお客さんが気軽に立ち寄れる場所にしたい」という想いが、店の根底にある。

節目の10周年を越え、グローリーハウスは新たな日常へと繰り出す。10周年イベントでは、これまでの歩みを支えてきた人々が集まり、店の歴史を象徴する温かな時間となった。

“日常”を大切にするその姿勢が、島の人々の心をこれからも温めていく。

The bright green door of Café & Restaurant Glory House catches your eye from the street.
Step inside, and you’ll notice the matching Green speaker crafted by Taiheizan Audio, filling the room with warm sound.

Glory House is known for its signature dish, “Myahk Chicken,” and for the Scones and Bagels that line the showcase visible from the roadside — both beloved by locals and visitors alike.

The restaurant was opened in 2014 by Yukie Ishigai and her husband Jumpei, and now, after eleven years, they are stepping into their twelfth year together.

The name “Glory House” carries a story — it was inspired by “Sakaeya,” the family-run guesthouse once operated by Jumpei’s parents in their hometown of Kita-Ibaraki.
Though the place and form have changed, that family spirit continues quietly here on Miyakojima.

Before opening the restaurant, Yukie had a very different path.
She was once an athlete, a dedicated track and field runner, until an injury forced her to give up competition.

Afterward, she began working part-time in restaurants and discovered a love for cooking.

Amid the long, busy shifts, she learned how to bake scones and bagels — skills that would later become the heart of Glory House’s menu.

Rather than being a “refined restaurant,” Yukie prefers to think of Glory House as a “fun and friendly dining place.”

“We want local people to feel comfortable dropping by anytime,” she says.

That sense of casual warmth lies at the heart of the restaurant’s philosophy.

After celebrating its tenth anniversary, Glory House is moving steadily toward a new chapter.
The anniversary event brought together friends, family, and long-time patrons — people who have supported the restaurant’s journey.
It became a heartfelt gathering, a living reflection of its history.

2021年より、先代であるお母さまからお店を引き継ぎ、今年で5年目を迎える萬矢叶子さん。
代表就任直後から、什器の配置やレイアウトの見直しを行い、企画展の開催も視野に入れたリニューアルを進めてきた。

「叶」という名は、先祖の名前に由来し、叶子さん自身の名にも重ねられている。
叶が歩んできたこれまでの過程で、さまざまな地域の作家たちと関わりを持ってきた。
そうした出会いを送るなかで、叶子さんの根底にはいつも「宮古らしさとは何か」という問いがある。

現在は、叶オリジナルのプロダクト（風鈴・お香・マース袋など）を少しずつ発表しており、訪れた人が気軽に手に取れるよう、店づくりにも工夫を凝らしている。
周囲の環境や時代の変化に伴い、若い世代や男性客など、新しい層の来店があることもここ最近の傾向だ。

宮古島の伝統工芸である『宮古上布』を、今後はより本格的に発信していきたいと叶子さんは語る。

“From Tradition and Inheritance to Industry — What Does It Mean to Be ‘Miyako”

Since 2021, Kanako Yorozuya has been leading Ryukyu COLLECTION Kana, succeeding the store from her mother, the previous owner.
Upon taking over, she immediately began rethinking the layout and display of the shop — moving forward with a renewal that also considered the future possibility of holding curated exhibitions.

The name “Kana” originates from her family lineage and also connects to her own given name.
While the shop once carried works by artists outside Okinawa—such as Bizen ware—Kana now spends her days exploring what truly represents “Miyakojima’s essence.”

Today, she continues to introduce original Kana products—such as wind chimes, incense, and maasu (salt) pouches—while refining the space so that visitors can casually pick them up and enjoy them.
With changes in the surrounding environment and times, younger generations and more male customers have also begun to visit in recent years.

The Present State of “Miyako Jōfu”

Kana speaks passionately about her desire to more fully promote Miyako Jōfu, the traditional textile craft of Miyakojima.
She is working to build a local distribution network and to create opportunities where people can experience weaving (hataori) and indigo dyeing up close.

“By going beyond mere preservation and inheritance, I want to establish a framework that develops these traditions into a living industry—one that proudly represents the culture of Miyakojima.”

In her words, behind her ever-charming smile, one could sense an unwavering determination.

What fascinates me is Takeshi Yoro’s keen observation of society through the minute details of living creatures, and Hayao Miyazaki’s reflections on how to nurture children’s sensibility.
The dialogue between these two perspectives makes the book truly captivating.
In particular, I love the pages where Miyazaki illustrates his vision of an ideal playground for children — the drawings are so charming that I can’t help but linger over them.

It’s also a book I often choose as a gift for friends.

It’s where my mother’s roots are. Whenever I feel the need to refresh or cleanse my mind, I find myself drawn there.

> The pursuit of happiness for everyone involved.
There should never be any disadvantage to the customers, artists, or staff. This belief is rooted in the corporate philosophy of my previous workplace.

> My late grandfather, Masayoshi Sadoyama.
I still keep his extensive fieldwork notes and a wealth of materials close at hand, but I often wish I could have heard his voice and stories in person.

「素材の持ち味を活かすシンプルな料理の方が得意」

居酒屋「すく」のメニューは、どれを選んでもすべてが美味しい。
つい頼んでしまう黒板メニューは、店主の直筆によるものだ。

古宇利島出身の店主・平田実さんは、幼少期から自然に囲まれて育った。
部活そっちのけで漁の手伝いに励み、半農半漁の家業を10人兄弟の末っ子ながら支えてきたという。
その生活のなかで、自然と寄り添う感覚が身体に刻まれた。

毎朝の日課である花への水やりも、「たっぷりとかけてあげること」が大切だと話す。
素材や食材への愛情も同じで、惜しみなく手をかけることを忘れない。

DNAレベルで染みついた素材への向き合い方はシンプル。
便利な機械や調理器具を用いず、何十年と手に馴染んだ道具で丁寧にお料理する。

子ども時代から料理が大好きで、20代の頃に那覇の割烹で修業を積み厳しい手ほどきを受けた。
「創作料理よりも、素材の持ち味を活かすシンプルな料理の方が得意」と、穏やかに振り返る。

宮古島に移り住んだ当初は、城辺・福里でお弁当・惣菜のお店を立ち上げた。
朝から晩まで働きづめの日々の中、地元の人々からはオードブルやお酒のつまみの注文が絶えなかった。
10年を経て、2015年に平良の地で「すく」を創業。
今年で節目の10周年を迎えた。

常に料理の仕込みを怠らず、入念な準備を当たり前にこなす。
その姿勢が「すく」の味を支えている。

店名の「すく」は、妻・えつこさんの実家の屋号に由来する。
また、沖縄の郷土料理“スクガラス”(アイゴの稚魚）や、宮古の言葉で“底”を意味する言葉としても親しまれている。
「“すく”という重たい名前は自分に責任感を持たすため、絶やさないように」と語る。
その名の通り、底から湧き上がるような”すく”の底力はまだまだ計り知れない。

“Simple Dishes That Bring Out the True Flavor of the Ingredients”

At Izakaya Suku, every item on the menu is delicious — no matter what you choose.
The handwritten chalkboard specials, written daily by the owner himself, are especially hard to resist.

Born and raised on Kouri Island, owner Minoru Hirata grew up surrounded by nature.
As the youngest of ten siblings in a semi-agricultural, semi-fishing family, he spent his youth helping with the day’s catch instead of attending club activities.
Through that way of life, a deep, instinctive connection with nature took root within him.

Every morning, he tends to his flowers — a quiet ritual he never skips.

“You have to water them generously,” he says.
The same philosophy applies to cooking: treat the ingredients with love, and never hold back on the care they deserve.

His approach to food is deeply ingrained — almost at the level of DNA.
He avoids modern machines and electric appliances, preferring instead the simple tools that have fit naturally in his hands for decades.

Cooking has been a passion since childhood.
In his twenties, Hirata trained rigorously at a kappō restaurant in Naha, where he honed his technique under strict guidance.

“I’m better at simple dishes that let the ingredients speak for themselves,” he says with a calm smile, “rather than at overly elaborate creations.”

After moving to Miyakojima, he first opened a small bento and deli shop in Fukuzato, Gusukube.
He worked tirelessly from morning till night, and soon gained loyal local customers who would often order party platters or side dishes to pair with drinks.

A decade later, in 2015, he opened Suku in Hirara.
This year marks the shop’s 10th anniversary — a milestone built on years of quiet dedication and consistency.

Hirata never cuts corners in his kitchen.
He’s meticulous with preparation and ingredients, always ensuring that the foundation of each dish is solid.
That unwavering attention is what gives Suku its distinct, comforting flavor.

The name “Suku” carries multiple layers of meaning.
It comes from the house name of his wife Etsuko’s family, but it also recalls “sukugarasu,” a traditional Okinawan delicacy made from juvenile rabbitfish preserved in salt, and in the Miyako dialect, “suku” means “bottom” — the base, the depth.

“It’s a heavy name,” Hirata admits. “I chose it to remind myself of responsibility — to never let it fade away.”

True to its name, the strength that rises quietly from the bottom — Suku’s depth — continues to grow, unseen yet unmistakable.

緑のドアの奥には大きなバーカウンターと柔らかな照明。

そして落ち着いたトーンで迎えてくれる店主の存在が、訪れる人を安心させてくれる『酒場 奏』だ。

店内の空気を読みながら、緩急をつけてBGMを選曲する店主のすなおさん。

2010年にオープンしたこの店名には、所有していたターンテーブルやレコードを組み合わせ、音楽が流すバーのイメージを込めて「奏」と名付けた思いがある。

東京時代に酒屋でアルバイトをした経験から多様なお酒に触れ、宮古島にもたくさんあるバーでなく、「焼酎バー」としてスタートした。

とはいえ飽き性が勝り、次第にお店のスタイルを柔軟に変化させていくようになった。

『酒場 奏』の魅力は、常に変化を続けていること。

ときには店主自らトライアスロンに挑戦し、その縁でトライアスリート同士のお客さんが集まるなど、独自の広がりも見せる。

「ノリで始めた店だから、長年こうして続けられていることが自分でも不思議」と振り返るすなおさん。

“Finding Joy in Constant Change”

After the first round of drinks with friends, when the night is still young and conversation is flowing, you might stroll down a quiet street looking for a second stop — and almost miss this unassuming doorway.

Step through the green door, and you’ll find a spacious bar counter bathed in soft, warm light.
It’s here that the calm, grounded presence of the owner, Sunao Yonaha, welcomes guests into the relaxed atmosphere of Sakaba SOU

Reading the mood of the room, Yonaha selects background music with just the right tempo — alternating between calm and rhythm.
The bar opened in 2010, and its name, Kanade (“to play music”), reflects his love for sound — inspired by the turntables and records he once owned, and the image of a bar where music naturally flows.

During his time in Tokyo, he worked part-time at a liquor store, where he was exposed to a wide variety of drinks.

When he returned to Miyakojima, he wanted to create something different from the many bars already on the island — and so SOU began as a shōchū bar.

But Sunao-san admits with a laugh that he tends to get bored easily. Over time, the style of the bar evolved — flexibly, organically — in response to new inspirations and encounters.T

he charm of Sakaba SOU lies in its constant evolution.
At times, Yonaha himself takes on challenges — even competing in triathlons — and through these experiences, his circle of triathlete friends and customers has grown.

“I started this place on a whim,” he says with a smile.
“Even now, it still feels strange to me that it’s lasted this long.”

As our conversation draws to a close, Yonaha’s eyes light up with quiet anticipation — already thinking about what the next change might bring.

「世界の解像度を高めることに繋がるか。いろんな物に触れる。いろんな物を知る。いろんな物が分かる。」

近年、宮古島市総合博物館は話題の特別展示を立て続けに開催している。

その博物館の学芸員のひとりである湯屋秀捷さんは、北海道白糠町の出身。
学生時代には南山大学人類学に進学し、展示資料を直接触れられる独特の学びの場に強く惹かれた。

初めて宮古島を訪れたのは在学中の2017年の夏。名古屋からの直行便を利用し、一週間ほど滞在した。

腰原エリアから島尻集落まで自転車で横断し、そこで出会ったのが厄払いや豊穣を予祝する来訪神「パーントゥ」である。そこの地元の人々との交流をきっかけに関心を深め、現在では島尻青年会にも属している。

就職活動の時期、偶然にも宮古島市総合博物館で学芸員の募集があり、「受けないわけにはいかない」と応募。そして、合格を果たした。

特定分野に依存せず、あらゆるフィールドに関心を注ぐ姿勢が湯屋さんの強みだ。

「学校とは違って、博物館は知識を求めに行くだけではなく、まったく知らないものに出会える場。そうした“面白さ”を体感できる展示の仕掛けを考えていきたい」と語る。島内で博物館の存在感をいかに高めていくかも、常に意識しているという。

湯屋さんの興味の対象は尽きることがない。

文献には載っていないが、実際に宮古島に暮らすことで初めて見えてくる慣習に惹かれるという。

年中行事は沖縄本島とも少し異なり、島内の集落ごとに習わしが違う。例えば、旧盆・迎え日には墓前で焚いた線香の火を家に持ち帰る――先祖を迎えるための独特の風習も、そのひとつだ。

未知の文化や慣習に出会い、それを理解していくこと。

湯屋さんの語る「世界の解像度を高める」という言葉を、少しずつ現実のものにしている。

“To Sharpen the Resolution of the World“

“Does this help sharpen the resolution of the world?

In recent years, the Miyakojima City Museum has continued to attract attention with a series of special exhibitions.
One of its curators, Hidetoshi Yuya, hails from Shiranuka, Hokkaido.

As a student, he majored in anthropology at Nanzan University, where he was fascinated by the unique approach of learning through direct contact with real artifacts and materials.

He first visited Miyakojima in the summer of 2017, during his time at university. Taking a direct flight from Nagoya, he stayed for about a week.
Riding his bicycle from the Koshihara area to the Shimoji district, he encountered the island’s visiting deity, Paantu — a traditional ritual figure that wards off evil and celebrates fertility.

This meeting, along with the warmth of the local community, sparked a deep and lasting interest in the island’s culture. Today, Yuya is also a member of the Shimajiri Seinenkai, which helps organize the ritual.

During his job search, he discovered by chance that the Miyakojima City Museum was hiring a curator.

“There was no way I couldn’t apply,” he recalls.
He did — and was accepted.

Yuya’s strength lies in his curiosity that refuses to be confined to a single field.

“Unlike school, a museum isn’t just a place to seek knowledge — it’s a place to encounter things you never knew existed,” he says.
He hopes to create exhibitions that allow visitors to feel that sense of discovery, while also working to deepen the museum’s presence and relevance within the local community.His curiosity never runs dry.
He is particularly drawn to customs that cannot be found in books — traditions that only reveal themselves through living in Miyakojima.

The island’s annual rituals differ slightly from those on Okinawa’s main island, and even among villages, the practices vary.
For example, during the Bon Festival, some families carry the flame from incense burned at their ancestors’ graves back home — a unique gesture to welcome the spirits of the departed.

Yuya finds meaning in encountering the unknown and striving to understand it.
Through this process, he is steadily bringing his idea of “sharpening the resolution of the world” into reality.

艶やかな声量が元気の象徴であるまきこさんのインスタグラムをのぞくとさまざまな人たちとの交流の様子が垣間見れる。

石けん作り体験を通したお客さまたちとのコミュニケーションは、まきこさんならではの楽しい時間を提供してくれる。

もともと”グリセリンクイーン”という店名の由来は大好きな甲本ヒロト率いる『ザ・クロマニヨンズ』の曲名からとった。

しかし、その奥にはアメリカのロックミュージシャン『スージー・クアトロ』のGlycerine Queenの存在を知ることとなる。

いつもエネルギーがみなぎるまきこさんはロックンロールさながら明るくほがらかな存在だ。

ある日、宮古でノニジュースを作っているおじいさんに「石けんを作りなさい」と言われた。その一言が、まきこさんを石けん作りの世界へ導いた。

お店で体験できる石けん作りは、まるで科学実験のようだ。
植物性の油に水酸化ナトリウムを加えると化学反応が起こり、石けんが生まれる。その過程で生まれるのが「グリセリン」。グリセリンは、化粧品にも使われる保湿成分として知られており、肌のうるおいを守ってくれる。

そのうえ、石けんの色付けは宮古島ならでは素材を採用したり、香りは植物由来のエッセンシャルオイルも選べたりとカスタマイズできる喜びは何にも変え難い独自の体験として記憶に宿る。

“Memories of Travel Awaken Through Fragrance”

A quick glance at Makiko’s Instagram reveals her radiant energy and her joyful exchanges with people from all walks of life.
Through her soap-making workshops, she creates moments of genuine connection — experiences filled with laughter, curiosity, and warmth.

The name of her shop, “Glycerin Queen,” was originally inspired by a song by The Cro-Magnons, one of her favorite bands led by Hiroto Kōmoto.

「どしんどしん足を踏み締めて、ゆっくり浸透していく」

今年で12年を迎える“TRAMP”という店名は、チャーリー・チャップリンの映画『The Tramp』に由来する。

TRAMPとは「小さな放浪者」や「どしん、どしんと足を踏み締める」という意味をも帯びる言葉。

ゆっくりと放浪(旅)をするように、古着と新品が重なり合う店——そんな思いから名付けられた。

高校時代はサッカーに明け暮れた。

同じ頃、東京をはじめ日本各地で起きていた裏原ブームの熱は、離島の宮古島にも届いていた。

同級生たちとわずかな情報を頼りに雑誌をめくり、東京のショップに電話して通販したり、地元の店を巡ったり。

洋服の話題は日常だった。

その時代の宮古では身近な先輩たちの洋服に対する真剣な眼差しに強い刺激を受けた。

身の回りにいた個性的な装いに注いだ情熱は今も鮮やかに思い出せる。

高校卒業後、進学した沖縄本島時代で「Walker」に巡り合い、縁があって勤め先として従事した。

さまざまな経験をしたのちに宮古に帰島したころ、かつて熱狂していた洋服のお店が姿を消しつつあった。

これまでの経験や思いを経て、ずっと大事にしてきたことを凝縮して一から形にしたのがTRAMPである。

オンラインで何でも購入できる時代にあっても、あえてリアルな店舗を構えることの重要性を語る。

“With Steady Steps, Slowly Seeping In“

Now in its twelfth year, the name “TRAMP” comes from Charlie Chaplin’s film The Tramp.
The word “tramp” carries two meanings — a little wanderer and one who walks with heavy, deliberate steps.

Like a slow journey on foot, the store was named with the wish to create a space where vintage and new clothing could coexist — layers of time and taste overlapping gently.

In high school, he spent his days devoted to soccer.
Around the same time, the heat of Tokyo’s Urahara street-fashion movement reached even the remote island of Miyako.

With only fragments of information, he and his friends flipped through fashion magazines, called shops in Tokyo to order by phone, and explored the few stores on the island.

Talking about clothes was simply part of everyday life.

He recalls being deeply inspired by the older local youth — their genuine, almost spiritual approach to style.
The passion for individuality and clothing that surrounded him back then remains vivid in his memory.

After graduating, he moved to Okinawa’s main island for school, where he encountered a shop called “Walker.”
By chance, he ended up working there, gaining invaluable experience before eventually returning home to Miyako.

As time passes, so too does the time we spend with our furniture deepen in meaning.
Firmly rooted in the island’s soil, the history built alongside this community continues to live on as a strong and steady foundation.When he came back, he noticed that many of the stores that had once fueled his youthful excitement for fashion were disappearing.
So he decided to distill everything he had learned and cherished into a single form — and that became TRAMP.

In an era when almost anything can be bought online, he speaks about the importance of having a physical store — a place where you can discover something that moves you, even if it’s from a brand you’ve never known before.
A place where music plays, films are discussed, and encounters happen by chance.

No matter the era, those serendipitous meetings are what matter most.

Living on the island, he often hears people say,

“I don’t even know where I should go to dress up.”

The years TRAMP has spent rooted in the island’s rhythm — in its everyday life and quiet seasons — have slowly, almost imperceptibly, seeped into the hearts of the people of Miyako.

Questionnaire

Do you usually wake up early in the morning?
> I wake up before 7 a.m., together with my kids.

What’s your favorite drink?
> Lemon tea

I drink it with my children. hot coffee.

What`s Your favorite subject in school?

Japanese language.
Even though I went into the science program in high school, I naturally developed a habit of reading and thinking deeply — things that still stay with me today.

What color do you often use?
> I’ve always liked brown, though I can’t really explain why.

Is there a movie you’ve watched over and over again?

Too many to name, but I’ve rewatched a lot of films starring Al Pacino.

If you could pick one book from your bookshelf, which would it be?
> –

Where is your favorite place?
> I’m more of an indoor person (laughs).
So I’d actually like to make it a goal to find a favorite place outdoors.

If you had to choose one song that fits your mood right now, what would it be?
> The Lounge Lizards – “Bob the Bob.”
It’s the band led by actor John Lurie. I play it at least once a day at the shop.

What do you always carry with you?

> –

Do you have any daily routines?

> Taking my kids to school in the morning — and picking them up later in the day.

What’s a word or concept you recently looked up?
> I’m always looking up words and ideas related to vintage clothing.

Do you have a method for generating ideas?
> I try to stay open to both the old and the new — catching anything that feels fresh.
The core of my item selection hasn’t changed much since opening, but I’m always aware of how times are shifting and how the world around us evolves.

How do you usually express or output those ideas?
> I often draw inspiration from films or things I see, then tailor suggestions to suit my customers.

Is there anything you do regularly to stay health?
> I started playing soccer again — for the first time in ten years.

What do you value most in your work?

> To stay close to the person in front of me — communicating softly and flexibly, with understanding.

Is there someone you’d like to meet?

> I can’t narrow it down to just one person (laughs).

『旅は道草が楽しい』

香港最終日の陽が傾き始めた頃は、前半のツケで先に斜めに傾いてた胃が回復してきた頃でもあり、香港の中心街に戻った。歩き続けたことで、満腹だった胃袋にも少し余白ができたタイミングです。最後の腹ごしらえを前に、香港の混沌の象徴、『重慶大厦（チョンキンマンション）』へと足を運びました。
重慶大厦とは香港の混沌が凝縮された建物であり、湿度の高い多国籍ビル。その名の通りのマンションではなく、バックパッカー向けの安宿があったり、日曜夜でも営業しているレシートが発行されない両替所があったり、雑多なお店が混在した香港のカオスの象徴とも言える場所であり、ウォン・カーウェイの映画『恋する惑星』でも登場したり。

話しを戻します。

仲良しの知人から事前に聞いてた香港おすすめご飯を旅の最終地点として位置付け、腰を据えました。

香港初日は現金を持っておらず、お店の敷居をまたぐや否や現金のみだと判明して店を後に泣く泣く引き返した因縁の店です。
アジアでも有数な金融街として名高い香港も現金以外お断りのご飯屋もたくさんあり、現代と昔が入り混じったグラデーションのような空気感には、香港が歩んできた歴史がにじんでいるように感じられました。
肝心のメニューは、海老の卵が粉々に散りばめられた汁なし麺。ひと口食べて、文句なしで頬がゆるむ。店員さんにお礼を伝え、宿へと戻りました。

「衣食足りて礼節を知る」
最近、円安の影響で日本や宮古島に訪れる外国人も増えてきました。様々な人種や人と接して思うのは、会う人会う人が礼儀正しいということです。今回の旅でもそうでした。香港の前に滞在した韓国の方々の心からのおもてなしや、香港の飲食店の店員さんの振る舞いや相席になったお客さん。みんなが目を見て”ありがとう”といえる環境っていうのが当たり前すぎて、気にしないこともしばしばですが、素敵だなと思うからこそ、忘れてはいけません。
「衣食足りて礼節を知る」という日本のことわざがあります。衣食住が満たされてこそ、人は礼儀や道徳を身につけるようになる、という意味です。言い換えれば、「腹が減っているときには礼儀どころじゃない」ということにもなるが、むしろ、お腹が満たされた後だからこそ、きちんと感謝の気持ちを言葉にすることが大切なのかもしれません。(終)

『旅は道草が楽しい』

ときは、香港の喧騒から抜け出した昼下がりへと移ります。
喧騒から抜け出したとは言いつつも、各駅ごとに点在し活気のある市場は右に左にと首の運動にはもってこい。
四つ打ちの如く、トントントントンと中華包丁が肉塊に振り下ろされる光景が目の前に広がる。
八百屋の店主と目が合うと、「このアロエどうだ」「このニワトリどうだ」と腹の底から声をかけてくれる。何しろ元気で、何しろ賑やかだ。

お昼ご飯の目的は、何を隠そう刀削麺。
昨年東京で食べた刀削麺が忘れられず、本場でも気になり始めたのはだいぶ前の話。
目的地に到着したのは、ちょうど15時。
一見すると平面アルミの看板だが、角度を変えると奥行きが見え隠れする強度のあるサイン。
その立体感は、まるで刀削麺の厚みに通じるものがあるのかもしれない。

中国語のメニューに毎回翻弄されつつも、パワフルなおばちゃんの親近感に安心し始めた頃、雰囲気で受け答えできるようになるのが世渡り上手というもの。
メニューを見た瞬間に「これだ」と決め、あぐらをかいて待っていると、湯気をまとったワンタンメンがやってくる。そう、発注ミスである。

悟られないように平静を装おうとしたものの、本来の目的を果たせないことの方が悔やまれる。
外看板の左端に描かれたおっちゃんの顔がちらつき、申し訳ない気持ちでいっぱい。
気を取り直して麻辣刀削麺を追加発注。ついでにお水も頼んだら、来たのはお湯。再びの発注ミスである。

その直後、間髪入れず湯気を纏った麻辣刀削麺がやってきた。
熱々の品々を、熱々のお湯で流し込むスタイル。
15時を過ぎているにも関わらず、店内には続々と客がやってくる。
この人たちはランチ？ それとも三時のおやつ？ 何ご飯なのかわからない。

言うまでもなく、”ワンタンメン”も”麻辣刀削麺”も、辿り着いたその先には、切れ味鋭い至福が待ち構えていた。

胃袋からのぞきこむ香港は、とても楽しい。（続く）

『旅は道草が楽しい』

「点心」とは、『体の中心を点づる』――すなわち、少量の軽食でお腹を満たすことを意味する。
旅の教科書『TRANSIT』には、点心についてこう書かれていた。親切な解説により、1日5食のモチベーションで食に臨むと言われている香港人の理由が分かった気がする（いやいや、5食て）。

疑心暗鬼で朝食会場2軒目にテクテク歩いて向かっていた矢先、大箱レストランのガラス越しに、齢70〜80代であろう小柄なおばあさんが、たくさんのご馳走を前に一人せっせと食べている姿を見かけた。
人間界には、強心臓がいれば強胃袋の持ち主も実在するのだ。
そんなこんなで到着したのは、1926年創業の老舗「蓮香楼」。
前回の香港滞在でも2回通った名店である。何がいいって、飲茶ワゴンと呼ばれる、積み重なった蒸籠を乗せたタイヤ付きのワゴンが店内をうろついているところ。
席に近づいてくると、蒸籠のフタを取って中身を見せてくれる。
メニュー説明は中国語でわからないので、わかった風な相槌をしていたところ、目の前に座っていたシンガポールから来たご夫妻が丁寧に説明してくれた。
そう、この店は相席飲茶のスタイルなのである。
聞けばご夫妻もこのお店の常連で、2日間の旅の合間に寄ったとのこと。わかるぜその気持ち。
先客だった彼らの目の前には、すでにご馳走が並んでいて、宮古にもある通称“アフ”（黒糖蒸しパン）も鎮座していた。
「日本の蒸しパンの方が美味しいよ」と教えてくれた。そして、ココナッツの殻に入った『茶碗蒸し』も美味しいよ、と。

午前11時の朝食2軒目。胃袋もすでに2回転目。
わかったことは、香港の人は本当に飲茶が好きだということだ。
どの時間帯に訪れても、お店の人は忙しく動き回っていて、円卓にはお客さんがびっしり。共通しているのは、みんな笑顔で溢れているということ。
そして、必ずいるのが、新聞に全集中している無敵のおじさん。相席しながらも。
そういう風景もまた、香港の飲茶の一部なのかもしれない(続く)
