“It starts with me enjoying what I do. If the customers are having fun too, that’s all that really matters.”

It was back in 1995—30 years ago—that Fumio Sunada arrived in Miyakojima from his hometown in Chiba.

He began working in the local food scene, gradually becoming involved with long-standing island establishments such as Adish (now closed) and Bockley. 16 years passed in this way, and in 2011, he opened his own place: Sake and Tabi Garimpeiro.

Fumio has crafted a world entirely his own. The unique atmosphere he radiates is something you can’t quite capture on a screen—it’s the kind of tactile warmth you have to feel in person.

A rainbow flag hangs at the entrance, signaling that people of all genders and nationalities are welcome. Inclusivity and safety are a given, but just as important to Fumio is that he, too, is having fun.

At the same time, he speaks with conviction about the importance of keeping the Place running for the long term.

Step inside, and you’ll find the place filled with decorations gathered from Fumio’s many travels—objects that radiate a worldly charm, curated with a flat, open-minded aesthetic.

The food and drinks on offer are no exception: all of them are Garimpeiro-style originals, inspired and reimagined from his journeys.

Locals and travelers alike gather around the counter, drawn in by the chance to chat with the ever-upbeat owner. Their conversations turn each evening into a lively, communal night.

And for those who can’t make it to the bar, there’s always Garimpeiro’s Golden Nugget Hour, a podcast you can listen to on your phone for timely updates and stories from the shop.

“Food should speak before I do.”

Through food, conversations naturally emerge unconsciously, and connections naturally expand. Sennin-san entered the restaurant industry in his early twenties, starting with front-of-house work before picking up the knife and wielding the wok.

He currently runs one of the still-rare ethnic cuisine restaurants on Miyakojima Island. What’s particularly noteworthy is the breadth of his menu offerings.

When asked about his approach to generating ideas, he emphasizes the importance of “knowing the fundamentals” first. He thoroughly researches a single dish or ingredient, then gradually transforms it, considering it from different angles and refining it. The dishes born from this process maintain their uniqueness while serving as “conversation starters.”

During his Tokyo days, he was deeply immersed in menu development at “Cheese Café: I Am a Goat” in Koenji. He handled numerous event appearances, often drawing instant queues in front of the shop. He’s also well-versed in managing the tempo and flow of busy service.

Some people might be somewhat cautious when they hear “ethnic cuisine.” At Sennin Restaurant, he aims to create an open space that transcends genre boundaries, where everyone can feel at ease and connect with one another.

【 Morning Stand Eldorado | Genki Hagiiwa 】

The breakfast spot Morning Stand Eldorado first opened its doors in December 2023.

The reason behind owner Genki Hagi-iwa’s decision to start a breakfast shop? Simply put, it was for his health.

While managing multiple roles in web production and marketing, he also spent many nights drinking late into the evening with friends. After continuing that lifestyle for some time, he gradually began to reflect on his well-being.

He turned to Fumio Sunada, owner of Tabi to Sake Garimpeiro, for advice. Encouraged by their conversation, he shifted toward a morning-oriented lifestyle, ultimately launching Morning Stand during the hours when Garimpeiro is closed.

Originally from Kagoshima, Hagi-iwa lived in Saitama, Hiroshima, and San Francisco before settling in Miyakojima, where he’s now in his seventh year.

Even when he travels for his main work, his trusted staff keep the shop running smoothly in his absence.

Visitors from abroad may feel a quiet sense of comfort discovering a proper, classic breakfast—toast, bacon, fried eggs—here in Miyakojima, far from home.

The self-proclaimed “easily bored” owner continues to serve the same reliable morning meals every day.
That act of repetition is a quiet expression of embracing daily life and committing to it over time.

    Questionnaire

Do you usually wake up early in the morning?
    > Around 6 a.m.

    What’s your favorite drink?
    > Coffee—I drink two to three cups a day.

What color do you often use?
    > Green.

Is there a movie you’ve watched over and over again?
    > Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995), starring Steven Seagal.

If you could pick one book from your bookshelf, which would it be?
    > Tadareta Seikatsu by Kodama Kawashiri.

    Where is your favorite place?
    > Garimpeiro.

If you had to choose one song that fits your mood right now, what would it be?
    > Childish Gambino – Redbone LIVE

What do you always carry with you?

    > Sunglasses, silver accessories, and a pinky ring.

Do you have any daily routines?
    > Not really—I’m easily bored, so I don’t stick to routines.

What’s a word or concept you recently looked up?
    > The release date of the RICOH GR IV.

Do you have a method for generating ideas?
    > I take in as much as I can—looking, eating, drinking (input). Then I try to verbalize what I’ve absorbed (output), and link it back to that input. That’s when ideas start to come together. In that sense, Miyakojima is a great environment—even compared to big cities.

Is there anything you do regularly to stay health?

    > I avoid snacking, work out at the gym, and make an effort to take breaks from my phone—just looking at the scenery and letting my mind drift.

What’s important to you when it comes to work?

    > Doing what needs to be done, when it needs to be done — and doing it properly.

Is there someone you’d like to meet or someone you respect right now?

    【 .JP KITCHEN | Jumpei Ogasawara 】

Opened in July 2024 by Jumpei Ogasahara, originally from Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture.

During high school, he devoted himself to the brass band club, then went on to study at a culinary school in Tokyo.

After graduation, he gained experience at restaurants in Tokyo before traveling to Melbourne, Australia. At the Middle Eastern restaurant “Maha,” he encountered ingredients and spices from different cultures, nurturing his flexible sensibility.

In 2020, he relocated to Miyako Island. Through a fateful reunion with Chef Yasuhiro Tomari, who is from Miyako Island and whom he had met during his Tokyo days, he served as Sous-Chef at the resort restaurant < Etat Desprit Ryukyu > ( Preparation for relocation ). He was involved in launching < UEWASORA > (now closed), leading to his current venture <.JP KITCHEN >.

The reality is that not only in urban areas, but everywhere, restaurants that prioritize efficiency appear and disappear as waves of tourism demand surge.

However, his establishment stands as a rare presence that captures the seasons and proposes ways to satisfy hunger while being mindful of local ingredients, offering versatile cuisine that continues to grace tables today.

He spares no effort in communicating with local farmers and fishermen on the island, deeply focusing on the land and the ingredients it provides, breathing new life into Miyako’s culinary scene.

He ventures out into the island’s fields himself in pursuit of ingredients, immersing himself daily in developing unknown menu items while delivering seasonal produce fresh.

Unconstrained by culinary genres, his activities span widely, including lunch courses, catering services, and event participation.

    ▷BLOG : 「PAPAYA Original T-shirt Shop Blog – Miyako Island」

    【 PAPAYA | Masahiro Shimabukuro 】

Today, T-shirts featuring beer company logos and designs symbolizing travel destinations can be found everywhere—in city streets and airports. Mr. Shimabukuro started his T-shirt and souvenir shop more than 30 years ago, when such scenes didn’t yet exist.

At that time, silk screen printing techniques were still relatively new, and there were hardly any people who could be called competitors in the field. There were few supermarkets, and obtaining daily necessities was much more inconvenient than it is today. Under these circumstances, Mr. Shimabukuro would venture out to rural areas himself, introducing T-shirts one by one and selling them to local women.

The scale of his shop gradually expanded, and he began operating in other regions as well. However, there were times when he had to close stores, and he frequently had to relocate to adapt to regional changes such as road expansion. He settled in his current location about five years ago.

Having continued T-shirt making for many years, incorporating unique designs that are distinctive to Miyako Island, Mr. Shimabukuro says in reflecting on his journey, “I want to pass the baton to young people from now on.”
